Bohemia brewing culture

This is the cradle of Pilsner or Lager beer.

The Czech Republic has a great brewery history. Indeed, the first production of hops dates to 1118. The success of this industry played a crucial role in the country’s economic development. The region of Bohemia enjoyed a flourishing period already in the Middle Ages, thanks to the exploitation and export of hops.

However, the series of conflicts that plagued central Europe (the Thirty Years’ War and the two world wars, to name but the most important) disrupted this once prosperous market. The post-war Communist regime took over the production of Czech beer, making it cheap and of poor quality. It was not until the 1980s that the beer industry was revived.

The discovery of Pilsner lager dates to the 1840s in the town of Pilsen. This method of brewing made it possible to make this type of beer everywhere in the world.

In 2008, the European Commission granted the Czech Republic the possibility of using the European Label for Protected Geographical Indications (PGI). Thus, brewers must comply with a set of rules relating to raw materials and the manufacturing process.

The Czechs are the world’s biggest consumers of beer. The brewery economy plays an important role in the country, with more than 40 industrial breweries and 2 million hectolitres of beer exported every year.
